Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
