RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.
UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
