No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
