Each time a major honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
