Unidentified Magenta Slime on Isolated Tasmanian Coast Raises Anxiety of Likely Algal Bloom

Agencies in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with certain experts anxious it could be an algal bloom.

Widespread Appearance On Shore

The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a stretch of a coastal area about 37 miles south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been noted on sections of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.

Specimens Taken for Examination

Specimens have been taken and sent to the regulatory body for examination. A representative commented that "algal blooms are a natural event in reaction to shifts in nutrients, temperature, rainfall or light".

"The events are at times called reddish tides because the blooms can change the water reddish," the representative said. "Only some algae outbreaks are toxic, with many species serving as a primary source of food for marine life in the marine food web."

"The usual source of crimson tides in local waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce luminous nighttime effects at night."

A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the rosy slime in the state, commented it appeared the suspected bloom had "expanded greatly" and indicated the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, pointing to like situations in other places.

"Thus we needs to send a strong warning here, the authorities and the EPA need to act to this. We need to examine the examples we've collected and we need to notify the community here," she emphasized.

The scientist stated she had worries for public safety after noticing a prickling feeling along her body while being sprayed with contaminated seawater.
