Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for NYC in Inaugural Speech
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating External Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
